Getting Around Amsterdam with Kids: A Breeze!

Navigating a new city with little ones can feel daunting. Amsterdam has a user-friendly public transport system that is perfect for getting around with your crew.

Tram Power!

Trams are the heart and soul of Amsterdam's public transport network. They're frequent, easy to understand, and offer a fun way to see the city. Most importantly for families, trams are spacious and comfortable, allowing you to spread out with strollers and bags.

Ticket Talk

Tickets for trams can be purchased directly on board. For shorter stays, disposable paper tickets are likely the most convenient option. These tickets are valid for a set amount of time (e.g., one hour, one day) and allow unlimited travel within that timeframe on trams, buses, and metros operated by GVB. Purchase a multi-day GVB ticket if you plan on using public transport extensively. It'll save you time and hassle.

Where Your Ticket Takes You:

A single GVB ticket purchased on a tram is valid for all trams, buses, and ferries operated by GVB within the designated time period. This means you can hop on and off trams as you please, exploring different neighborhoods and attractions at your own pace. Keep in mind that GVB tickets are not valid for regional trains or travel to Schiphol Airport. For those journeys, separate tickets are needed.

Extra Tips  on Public Transportation

Download the GVB app for real-time tram arrival information and route planning.

Be sure to validate your paper ticket upon boarding by tapping it on the yellow card readers near the tram doors.

Most tram stops have designated stroller areas for easier boarding.

Consider purchasing the I amsterdam City Card, which combines free public transport with free or discounted entry to many attractions - perfect for families!
