Some of Puglia’s most interesting towns are found inland, and Massafra stands out among them.
The region is famous for the trulli of Alberobello, Lecce’s Baroque buildings, and its long Adriatic and Ionian coastlines. But Massafra is in the heart of the Terra delle Gravine, an area of deep limestone ravines in Taranto province.
Massafra was built around one of these ravines and is sometimes called Puglia’s answer to Ronda in Spain. This is because a deep gorge runs through the town, creating cliffs, bridges, cave churches, and scenic viewpoints.
