A 60,000-square-foot rooftop destination transforms the former Debenhams into a food, music and culture hub — just in time for the World Cup

Newcastle is getting a serious upgrade this summer. Freight Island Newcastle opens on Thursday 11 June 2026, perched on the rooftop of Eldon Square, and the scale of the thing is hard to overstate.

The 60,000 sq ft venue occupies the top floor and rooftop of the former Debenhams unit, creating what is billed as the largest single-site food, drink and entertainment venue in a UK city centre. For context, that's roughly the footprint of a football pitch.

The format will be familiar to anyone who's visited the original Freight Island in Manchester: 12 independent food kitchens and multiple bars fill an all-day space designed to move seamlessly from laid-back afternoons to late-night energy. The centrepiece is The Plant Room, a dramatic space set beneath what is described as the largest retractable roof of any UK hospitality venue, enabling year-round use regardless of the weather.

The timing of the launch is no accident. Freight Island Newcastle will host a World Cup Social from 17 June to 19 July, screening matches across 10 large HD screens positioned throughout the space, including beneath the retractable roof of The Plant Room. Appearances by Newcastle football legends are planned alongside live music throughout the tournament.

The economic footprint is significant too. The development is expected to create more than 300 jobs across hospitality, events, production and the creative industries.

Inspired by iconic global leisure destinations such as Coney Island in New York and Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, the venue is designed as a cultural destination for both residents and visitors to Newcastle city centre — a move to give Eldon Square a reason to draw crowds well beyond shopping hours.

Getting there:

Newcastle Central station is a short walk from Eldon Square. Direct trains run from London King's Cross (around 3 hours), Edinburgh (1.5 hours), and Manchester Piccadilly (under 2 hours). Newcastle Airport connects to major European hubs including Amsterdam, Dublin and Frankfurt.
