The city of Tampere, Finland, has been awarded the title of European Capital of Smart Tourism 2026 by the European Commission, marking a milestone for the city’s sustainable, tech-driven tourism strategy.
Tampere prevailed from a competitive shortlist of seven finalists, which included Braga, Bruges, Brussels, Genoa, Leipzig and Regensburg.
According to the European Commission, Tampere distinguished itself through an application focused on sustainable mobility solutions and tools for integrating smart city technologies into the visitor experience.
One highlight cited in the evaluation was Tampere’s climb in the Global Destination Sustainability Index — jumping from 23rd to 6th place — which underscored its commitment to elevating tourism sustainability standards.
As the 2026 European Capital of Smart Tourism, Tampere is set not only to showcase its existing strengths but also to roll out an array of innovative, sustainable tourism-driven initiatives. The European Commission noted that the city has “an interesting programme of activities” planned for the themed year.
The award by the European Commission is intended to spotlight destinations that lead in accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, and cultural heritage — and to foster knowledge sharing across Europe. With its 2026 title, Tampere joins a select group of cities recognised for advancing tourism through innovation, responsibility, and long-term planning.
